What is the Great British Insulation Scheme / GBIS Scheme?

The GBIS insulation initiative prioritizes single, cost-effective insulation measures over multiple measures like ECO4. Aimed at residences with low energy efficiency ratings in lower Council Tax band areas and EPC ratings of D or below, it will operate from April 2023 to March 2026, potentially saving UK households £300-£400 annually on energy bills. Households could receive up to £1,500 for energy efficiency upgrades, covering up to 75% of insulation costs, with residents responsible for the remaining balance.

Despite over 3.1 million home improvements made through the ECO Scheme since 2013, and only 42% of homes in England rated EPC C or higher, this insulation scheme is crucial for expanding benefits to more people.

Am I eligible for the government's Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS)?

DON’T CLAIM ANY BENEFITS? Homeowners qualify for complimentary loft insulation and partially subsidized internal wall insulation. Depending on your home’s size, you can receive up to 50% funding for wall insulation.

For private renters, free loft insulation and partially funded internal wall insulation are available, but your property must have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of either E or D.

IF YOU CLAIM BENEFITS Homeowners are entitled to complimentary heating controls, loft insulation, and partially subsidized internal wall insulation for all Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) bands.

Private tenants will receive free loft insulation and partially funded internal wall insulation if their property’s EPC rating falls within bands E and D.

Under ECO4 eligibility criteria, you must receive qualifying means-tested benefits to qualify, and in most cases, you will receive all services free of charge.

What does the GBIS Scheme funding cover?

The initiative will primarily implement affordable insulation measures such as:

  1. Internal wall insulation
  2. Cavity wall insulation
  3. Loft insulation
  4. Installation of smart heating controls

Approximately 80% of the £1 billion funding allocated for the insulation scheme will be accessible to households with an EPC rating of D or below, and residing in lower Council Tax bands.

Furthermore, a fifth of the funding will be directed towards the most vulnerable groups, including those receiving means-tested benefits or experiencing fuel poverty.

What sets apart the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) from ECO4?

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) schemes have facilitated the implementation of 3.5 million energy-efficient measures in approximately 2.4 million residences. Enhancing home energy efficiency stands as one of the most effective methods to decrease household energy consumption, lower energy bills, and foster a comfortable living environment.

Commencing in early 2022, the ECO4 scheme aims to assist individuals residing in homes with low EPC ratings and eligible for benefits. However, it overlooks individuals living in some of the least energy-efficient homes who do not receive other forms of government assistance. This is where the Great British Insulation Scheme steps in, offering assistance to hundreds of thousands of individuals in enhancing their home insulation.
