Heat pumps are the government's preferred replacement for ageing gas, oil and electric heating. They can lower your running costs, cut your home's carbon emissions, work with your existing radiators or underfloor heating, run quietly, and need less maintenance than a boiler — all while helping improve your EPC rating.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a UK Government grant (run by Ofgem) that pays £7,500 towards an air source or ground source heat pump, £5,000 towards a biomass boiler, or £2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump. From 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027, off-gas-grid homes can get up to £9,000. It's a grant, not a loan — you never pay it back. You'll need a valid EPC (less than 10 years old), and your MCS-certified installer applies for it on your behalf and deducts it from your quote upfront. Available in England and Wales.

Tell us about your home and current heating system — it only takes a minute to see if you could qualify for a grant.

An MCS-certified installer assesses your property and gives you a quote with the grant already deducted — no pressure, no obligation.

Your installer handles the Boiler Upgrade Scheme paperwork and applies to Ofgem on your behalf — you don't need to do a thing.

Your new heat pump is installed by certified engineers, and you start enjoying a warmer, more efficient home with lower running costs.

No. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government grant, not a loan. It's deducted from your installation quote upfront and never needs to be repaid.
You don't apply directly — your MCS-certified installer checks your eligibility, applies to Ofgem on your behalf, and deducts the grant from your quote before work begins.
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme covers England and Wales only. Scotland has its own Home Energy Scotland loans and grants, and the Northern Ireland Boiler Replacement Scheme is currently closed.
